This paper is devoted to the study of the mythopoetics of J. R. R. Tolkien's works in the context of modern literary myth-making. The focus is on the analysis of the methods of creating a mythological world characteristic of Tolkien's work, including the development of languages, cultures, stories and archetypal images. The study reveals how Tolkien not only borrows elements of myths, but rethinks them, forming an independent mythological system within the framework of fiction.
