This article analyzes the basis for the participation of lay judges - representatives of the public in considering cases of especially serious crimes, shortcomings, and problems in their work, the causes of these problems, and ways to eliminate them. The article also studied the criminal procedural legislation of several developed countries in Asia and Europe and carried out a comparative legal analysis with our national legislation. At the end of the article, proposals are given for the development of this legal institution.
