This article examines linguistic approaches to the concept of discourse in world, Russian, and Uzbek linguistics. Particular attention is paid to the structural, functional, situational and cognitive approaches to discourse. The article analyzes the views of D. Schiffrin, Z.S. Harris, T.A. van Dijk, Yu.S. Stepanov, Sh. Safarov, A.A. Kibrik and P.B. Parshin on the nature and interpretation of discourse. The study also considers the relationship between discourse and text, as well as the role of form, meaning, context and communicative action in the interpretation of discourse. Based on the approaches discussed, discourse is viewed as a complex linguistic phenomenon formed through the interaction of form, meaning and communicative action.
