The article analyzes the institutional formation and everyday educational practice of girls’ education in Turkestan in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It examines traditional schools led by otinoyi and bibiotin teachers, home-based instruction, the initiatives of enlightened women, the influence of Jadid schools and the social acceptance of girls’ education. The activities of Dilshod Barno, Anbar Otin, Uvaysiy and Samar-Bonu are assessed as important factors in the development of girls’ literacy, literary taste, moral education and social activism. The study reveals the curricular content, teaching methods, family-cultural context and modernizing significance of girls’ schools.
