The article analyses the formation and development stages of the concepts of dialect and dialectism in world linguistics. Using a comparative-historical approach, it reviews late-19th-century linguistic geography, English dialectology, the Russian dialectological school, the sociolinguistic approach and Uzbek dialectology. The study argues that the concept of dialectism evolved from a descriptive-geographical interpretation towards a systemic and socio-functional one.
