The article examines the formation of urbanization processes in the Republic of Karakalpakstan from historical, demographic, economic and socio-environmental perspectives. The study aims to identify the main stages of urbanization, current demographic dynamics and spatial characteristics of settlement. Official statistical data for 2010–2026 are used for comparative analysis. As of 1 January 2025, the permanent population of Karakalpakstan amounted to 2,029.7 thousand people, including 989.9 thousand urban residents, or 48.8 percent of the total population. The article formulates several research-based directions for sustainable urban development.
