Linguistic strategies for evaluating successful women in english-language media discourse: a pragmatic perspective

This article presents a linguopragmatic analysis of the linguistic means used to evaluate professionally successful women in contemporary English-language media discourse. For the purposes of this study, a "successful woman" is operationally defined as a woman occupying a publicly recognised leadership, executive, entrepreneurial or high-achievement role (e.g., company founder or CEO, senior executive, award recipient, or widely profiled public figure). Drawing on Appraisal theory and feminist pragmatics, and working with a small, non- random illustrative corpus of seven authentic English-language media texts (news reports, business-press profiles and institutional features, 2012–2023) retrieved through targeted web search, the study identifies four recurrent evaluative strategies: (1) polarised evaluative adjectives associated with the so-called "double bind", whereby traits typically praised in men can attract a penalising evaluation in women; (2) the intrusion of appearance- or life-stage-based qualifiers into ostensibly professional evaluation; (3) conceptual metaphors that frame female achievement in terms of struggle, balance and obstacle; and (4) hedging and attribution devices that mitigate direct praise or displace it onto a quoted third party. As the corpus is small and was assembled through convenience sampling rather than systematic corpus-building, the findings are offered as a preliminary analytical framework rather than as statistically established patterns, and as groundwork for a subsequent, larger comparative study of English and Uzbek media discourse.
