Annotatsiya

The article examines the sociolinguistic role of English-speaking subcultures in the formation and circulation of English slang. The author’s working corpus contains 180 units associated with hepcat, hipster, punk, goth, hippie, beatnik, Valley youth, Teddy Boy, Sloane Ranger, skinhead, yuppie, preppy, biker and rocker communities. Descriptive, componential, contextual, comparative and quantitative analyses reveal functions of group identification, solidarity, social boundary marking, evaluation and linguistic economy. A three-stage model is proposed in which a slang item develops from an in-group marker into an intergroup resource and, in some cases, into general informal vocabulary. The findings support treating subculture not merely as a thematic domain of slang, but as a communicative environment that generates lexical innovation and supplies it with social meaning.
