On written sources concerning the history and culture of the Tashkent oasis in antiquity and the high middle ages

Annotatsiya

The article provides a comprehensive analysis of written sources concerning the history and culture of the Tashkent Oasis in antiquity and the High Middle Ages. Based on the earliest written source, the Avesta, rock inscriptions dating to the Achaemenid period, ancient Greek and Roman sources, Chinese sources of the Early Middle Ages, Arabic and Persian written sources of the High Middle Ages, as well as inscriptions on archaeological artifacts and coins, the ethnic, geographical, socio-economic, political, and cultural life of the oasis is examined. The study evaluates different categories of sources, their reliability, and their degree of informativeness. Written evidence concerning the Saka tribes who inhabited the Tashkent Oasis in antiquity, the Turkic-Sogdian symbiosis during the Early Middle Ages, cities and rural settlements of the High Middle Ages, the economy, as well as the religious beliefs and cultural traditions of the population is systematized. The article emphasizes the importance of these sources for studying the cultural interactions between the Tashkent Oasis and other regions of Central Asia.
