The British Library’s Chagatai collections are poorly named. In this overview of language and linguistic diversity in the Library’s Turkic holdings, I explore why the term “Chagatai” has been applied erroneously to works exhibiting a number of different linguistic characteristics. I examine how the history of language among Central Asian Turkic communities appears within these collections, and what intellectual trends they encapsulate. In conclusion, I ask how we might describe them better in an effort to make them more meaningful as an archive, and to align them more closely with the worldviews and knowledge of contemporary Turkic communities.
