The article talks about the Samarkand regional library, which in 2021 was a century and ten years old. The author comments on the history of the library directly through the publications kept in its funds, namely, through the newspaper “Okraina”, which began to be published in Samarkand in the XIX century. For example, one of the last issues of “Okraina” in 1983 published a large analytical article by a well-known public figure in the region, Yuri Yakubovsky, entitled “What and how to study in our suburbs.” According to the article, since not everyone can afford to subscribe to books from Russia and various European countries due to the high cost of postal services, only some wealthy Samarkand residents order very “expensive, luxurious folders”, while others use the cheapest editions of Pavlenkov or Suvorin. Gradually, the author of the article of that period paid attention to the importance of libraries.
