The article presents a comparative legal analysis of the constitutional foundations of the social (welfare) state using the examples of the Federal Republic of Germany, the French Republic, the Russian Federation and the Republic of Uzbekistan. The relevance of the study is determined by the adoption, in 2023, of a new version of the Constitution of the Republic of Uzbekistan, which for the first time expressly defines the state as social, thereby requiring doctrinal elaboration of this category in national legal scholarship. The purpose of the article is to identify common patterns and national peculiarities in the constitutional consolidation of the social-state principle and to determine its legal nature. The formal-legal, comparative-legal and historical-legal methods form the methodological basis of the research. It is established that, despite terminological uniformity, the constitutional formula of the social state acquires different substantive content depending on the model of social protection, the degree of judicial enforceability of social rights and the level of the state's economic development. Proposals are formulated for the further concretisation of the state's social obligations in the sectoral legislation of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
