The oral mucosa may be affected by various inflammatory diseases, and since their clinical and histological features overlap with one another, distinguishing them, and in particular the process of differential diagnosis, can be difficult. Clinical correlation is of great importance for diagnosis. Inflammatory diseases of the oral mucosa are a pathological process arising from external and internal causes. They may be caused by mechanical injuries, chemical substances, incorrectly applied oral hygiene, or viral, bacterial or fungal infections in the oral cavity. When inflammation or injury appears in the mouth, the patient experiences pain, discomfort and difficulty in eating and speaking. Timely consultation with a doctor and correctly chosen treatment for the oral mucosa make it possible to prevent serious complications and to be rid of them. The article discusses gingivitis, which arises through infections of the oral mucosa.
