Frequency of goiter recurrence depending on the morphological form and volume of strumectomy

Surgical treatment was performed in 412 patients with nodular formations of the thyroid gland (NFTG). The analysis of the results of the surgical treatment of patients with NFTG showed that the main cause of goiter recurrence was the performance of organ-preserving operations to the extent of hemithyroidectomy or partial resection in nodular colloid goiter with foci of adenomatosis (recurrence 25.8%) and in the combination of various types of adenomas with multinodular colloid goiter (recurrence 13.7%). An increase in the total number of recurrences with the duration of the follow-up period and a decrease in the recurrence rate with an increase in the extent of the operation were established. The developed treatment-and-diagnostic algorithm for choosing a surgical intervention in nodular goiter, based on the stage-by-stage performance of morphological studies, made it possible to improve the treatment results of this group of patients, which led to a reduction of the early postoperative complications from 10% to 2.2% and of the disease recurrence from 12.6% to 2.2%.
