Bronchial asthma (BA) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are the most widespread obstructive diseases of the respiratory system. In 10–20 % of patients signs of both COPD and asthma are present. In a number of cases it is difficult to draw a boundary between these diseases, which causes difficulties in making a diagnosis and, as a consequence, results in hypo- and hyperdiagnosis. Treatment strategies for bronchial asthma and COPD differ substantially, therefore it is important to have clear diagnostic criteria for identifying the BA + COPD phenotype.
