CRYSTAL STRUCTURE AND ELECTRONIC ABSORPTION PROPERTIES OF A HETEROMETALLIC COBALT COORDINATION POLYMER DERIVED FROM EDTA

Annotatsiya

A new heterometallic coordination polymer, catena-Poly[[μ- ethylenediaminetetraacetato-diaquacobalt(III)]-μ-aqua-diaquasodium(I)], was synthesized from a cobalt(II) precursor through spontaneous aerial oxidation under ambient conditions. The compound was structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and its electronic absorption behaviour was investigated by UV-Vis spectroscopy. Structural analysis revealed that the asymmetric unit comprises one Co(III) centre, one Na(I) ion, one EDTA ligand, coordinated water molecules, and one μ-aqua bridge linking the two metal centres. The Co(III) ion adopts a slightly distorted octahedral CoN2O4 coordination environment, whereas the Na(I) ion is coordinated exclusively by oxygen donor atoms from the EDTA ligand and water molecules. The combined action of carboxylate groups and the μ-aqua bridge propagates the coordination framework into an extended catena polymeric structure further stabilized by hydrogen-bonding interactions. The UV-Vis spectrum exhibits three characteristic absorption bands at 283, 349, and 499 nm, which are assigned to ligand- centred π→π*, ligand-to-metal charge-transfer (LMCT), and Co(III)-centred d–d transitions, respectively. These transitions are consistent with the strong ligand-field environment generated by the EDTA ligand around the low-spin Co(III) centre. The combined crystallographic and spectroscopic investigation establishes a clear relationship between the coordination geometry and the electronic absorption behaviour of the coordination polymer, providing a structural basis for understanding the optical characteristics of heterometallic Co(III)-Na(I)-EDTA coordination materials.
