Annotatsiya

The rapid expansion of digital communication has transformed the ways in which individuals construct and express their identities in online environments. Among the various linguistic resources employed in Internet discourse, lexical-semantic means play a crucial role in representing personal, social, and cultural identities. The present study aims to identify and classify the principal lexical-semantic means used to express personal identity in English and Uzbek Internet discourse and to examine their functions from a comparative perspective. The research is based on authentic examples collected from publicly accessible online platforms, including social media profiles, usernames, biographies, and online comments. The study employs descriptive, lexical-semantic, comparative, and discourse-analytic methods. The analysis identifies four major lexical- semantic means of identity expression: self-naming through anthroponyms and usernames, self-identifying lexical labels, evaluative self-description, and identity through lexical combinations and compounds. The findings demonstrate that these lexical resources enable users to construct and communicate various aspects of their identity, including individuality, social roles, personal characteristics, interests, and values. Although English and Uzbek Internet discourse exhibits certain structural differences, both languages employ similar lexical-semantic strategies to achieve effective online self-presentation. The study contributes to a more systematic understanding of the linguistic realization of personal identity in digital communication and provides a functional classification that may serve as a basis for further comparative research in Internet discourse and identity studies.
