The article examines the numerous threads that connect Flaubert with the contemporary literary movement. The themes and social issues raised in his works, the types depicted in his novels, bring him closer to the «realistic» school of the 1850s. However, the understanding of art, aesthetics, and the ideological content of creativity sharply distinguish Flaubert from this school, which decisively rejected all of his works. Alien to him was the passion of the «realists» for «immediate sensation», transferred to literature in its rawest form, their exceptional interest in the authentic depiction of already familiar everyday things and delight in the everyday.
