The purpose of this article is to provide information about the history of the study of Turkish folk tales and the research work of scientists who have worked on this topic. Examples of the activities of people who collected and published fairy tales are given. Along with this, Turkish scholars’ defnitions of the fairy tale genre, their views on the role of images and fairy tales in folk art will be discussed. The article includes “Masal Araştırmaları” (Fairytale Research) by Sakaoglu Saim, Seyidogli Bilge’s “Erzurum Halk Masalları Üzerinde Araştırmalar” (“Researches on Arzurum Folk Proverbs”), Shimshek Esma’s “Yukarıçukurova Masalındar Motif ve Tip Araştırması” (“Research of Image and Type in Yuqorichukurova Tales”), “Mahmut Gazi Köyünn Halk Edebiyatı” (“Folk Literature of Mahmud Ghazi Village”) by M. Tughrul, “Motif and Type Research in Tales of Taşeli Plateau” by Ali Berat Alptekin (“Motif and Type Research in Tasheli Plateau Fairy Tales”), Behiye Koksel’s “A Study on Gaziantep Masalları Üzerine Bir İnceleme” (“A Studyon Gaziantep Fairy Tales”) and a number of articles by Pamuk Nur and Gumushtepa were used. Research was conducted on the basis of historical-comparative, biographical, and classifcation methods. In addition, a number of scientifc journals, conference collections and Turkish folklore bibliographies were used.
