Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is one of the causes of death in infants in the post-neonatal period. The "neurogenic theory" of this syndrome has a morphological confirmation in a small number of scientific works. The aim of the study is to clarify the risk factors for sudden death syndrome in children and to assess the pathomorphological changes in the brain. The article presents an analysis of medical records and forensic autopsies of 83 deaths of children who died as a result of SIDS for the period 2008-2019 in the Stavropol Territory of the Russian Federation. According to the results of the study, among the predisposing factors for the onset of SIDS are the pathology of the course of labor (premature, protracted, use of obstetric aids) and neurological pathology of the neonatal period and the first year of life (perinatal encephalopathy, hypoxic-traumatic and traumatic-hypoxic brain damage, natal damage to the cervical spine) spine, birth trauma of the brachial plexus). Histological examination of sectional material in SIDS made it possible to reveal in the posterior (autonomic) nucleus of the vagus nerve located in the medulla oblongata, degenerative changes in neurons in the form of chromatolysis and karyolysis phenomena, a glial reaction of the type of neuronophagy. Pathomorphological changes in the brainstem can be caused by combined intrauterine hypoxic and intranatal traumatic factors, which potentiate each other and lead to dysregulation of the respiratory rhythm with the development of a lethal outcome during sleep.
