The author of the article claims that at the end of the 19th century, archaeological excavations and scientific research in Afrasiab, carried out by Russian orientalists and archaeologists, began, in particular, the origins of the addition of the method of archaeological research were revealed. On the example of N.I. Veselovsky shows mistakes, lack of experience and methods for conducting archaeological excavations. N.I. Veselovsky worked for several years in Afrasiab and carried out excavations, but was not a trained specialist for excavation work not only in Afrasiab, but throughout Central Asia. At the same time, before N.I. Veselovsky, the Archaeological Commission of the Russian Empire set large and promising tasks.
