Improving the application of innovative and simulation-based methods in urology education

Urology education requires the development of theoretical knowledge, clinical reasoning, procedural competence, communication skills, and the ability to make safe decisions in complex clinical situations. Traditional teaching based primarily on lectures, observation, and direct participation in patient care does not always provide learners with equal exposure to essential procedures or sufficient opportunities for repeated practice. Simulation-based education offers a safe and controlled environment in which students and residents can develop technical and non-technical skills without exposing patients to preventable risks. This article examines opportunities for improving the use of innovative and simulation-based methods in urology education through a qualitative review of relevant scientific literature. The reviewed evidence indicates that anatomical models, task trainers, virtual reality systems, standardized patients, scenario-based simulations, digital learning platforms, and competency-based assessment can improve procedural performance, clinical confidence, teamwork, and decision-making. Simulation is particularly valuable for teaching urinary catheterization, cystoscopy, ureteroscopy, transurethral procedures, ultrasonography, laparoscopy, robotic surgery, and the management of urological emergencies. However, its effectiveness depends on clearly defined learning outcomes, deliberate practice, qualified instructors, structured feedback, valid assessment tools, and integration with clinical experience. The article proposes a progressive educational model that combines theoretical preparation, simulation, reflective debriefing, competency assessment, and supervised clinical practice. It concludes that simulation should not replace bedside education but should be systematically incorporated into the urology curriculum as a patient-safe bridge between theoretical knowledge and independent clinical performance.
