The article analyzes the concept of a new religious movement (NRM), and attempts to reveal its scientific and theoretical foundations, historical roots and modernization based on the views of religious scholars. The opinions of European and Russian religious studies scholars on the meaning and classification of this term are analyzed. It was also emphasized that the term NRM has different meanings depending on the approach of the researcher and his regional location.
