Today's generally accepted system of preserving cultural heritage is quite familiar and understandable for us. There are its components, including the parties that are involved in this process directly or indirectly, as well as the principles according to which the system works. These principles have been developed for many years and are the result of the painstaking work of specialists who have devoted their lives to the preservation of cultural heritage for future generations. This article describes both the process of the emergence and implementation of ideas for the preservation of cultural heritage, which were later implemented. We are also talking about UNESCO, an organization that has assumed the role of the main initiator and executor of the principles of the 1972 Convention. The exceptional role and commitment to the ideas of preserving cultural heritage have allowed UNESCO to become not only the keeper of traditions, but also a competent arbiter in the world community. The article also talks about the evolution of the principles of preservation of cultural heritage and the current state of affairs in this area, the problems facing this international organization.
