This article examines the origin, technological characteristics, and historicaldevelopment of grey-clay ceramics through archaeological and physicochemicalanalyses. The study provides a comparative assessment of grey potteryassemblages unearthed in Iran, Turkmenistan, the Fergana Valley, Khorezm, andother regions of Central Asia. Particular attention is given to the mechanism ofgrey coloration resulting from the firing of clay containing iron oxides underreducing conditions. Grey-clay ceramics are interpreted as high-technological craftproducts that emerged within ancient pottery traditions, often inspired by the formsof metal vessels. The paper presents a scientifically grounded analysis of thegradual evolution of these wares from the Neolithic to the Medieval periods, emphasizing their regional distribution and significance within the broader contextof cultural exchange and technological interaction.
