This article analyzes different interpre tations of the culture phenomenon in modern humanitarian studies, its functions and the role it plays in the social life of a linguistic personality. When analyzing this issue, the views of many scientists were studied and summarized. According to many scientists, language and culture have their semiosphere, in language these are mainly lexical and phraseological units, in culture - such stable units as symbols, stereotypes, traditions, rituals, and religious rites. Also, language and culture are mutually isomorphic systems - they have many similar features. At the same time, caution must be exercised when studying the relationship between language and culture because, firstly, these are different semiotic systems; secondly, in language as a phenomenon, orientation towards a mass addressee is valued, and in culture - elitism; thirdly, unlike language, culture cannot manifest itself; fourthly, cultural norms are not as obligatory as linguistic norms. The article also reveals the principles of analyzing the phenomenon of culture. The focus is on values that are extremely important in a culture. Their occurrence and forms of manifestation are explained
