The article is analyzes the historical evolution of the travel essay genre related to the concept of travel journalism in the Russian-language media space. Conclusions are formulated: intermediate - about the need to consider works of this kind both from a scientific and artistic point of view, final - that travel journalism in general and the travel essay genre are directly affected by cardinal changes in the socio-political structure, such as conquests of the Russian Empire in Central Asia in the 19th century, the revolution of 1917 and the collapse of the USSR at the end of the 20th century. A forecast is made for thedevelopment of travel journalism, based on the reduction of Russia's political and cultural ties with Western countries at the present stage and the development of these ties with the countries of the Central Asian region.
