This article discusses the necessity of developing metacognitive competence in prospective English language teachers and explores the potential of using reading strategies such as skimming, scanning, intensive reading, extensive reading, and analytical reading in this process. The article also highlights the relationship between reading strategies and the components of metacognitive competence, as well as the issues of not only developing linguistic knowledge but also enhancing students’ ability to consciously manage their own learning process in English language teaching.
