This article examines the process of expanding the powers of the European Parliament in the context of institutional reforms in the European Union. Starting with the limited powers of the Assembly, the European Parliament gradually developed its role, passing through key stages such as the adoption of the Single European Act, the Maastricht, Amsterdam and Lisbon Treaties. The article analyses in detail changes in the legislative, budgetary and supervisory functions of Parliament, and also discusses the problem of the democratic deficit in the EU and possible ways to overcome it. The conclusion highlights the significant contribution of the European Parliament to the democratization and strengthening of the governance of the European Union.
