This article examines the relationship between female characters’ musical abilities, conversational skills, and physical attractiveness in Jane Austen’s novels through the lens of gender poetics. Drawing on episodes from Mansfield Park, Sense and Sensibility, and Pride and Prejudice, it explores how women’s talents contribute to personal enjoyment, social recognition, and emotional intimacy. Musical performance is interpreted as a means of expressing the heroines’ inner feelings, revealing their aesthetic taste, and establishing relationships with others. Conversational skills, in turn, serve as a literary means of revealing women’s intellectual capacities, independent thinking, and responses to social situations. Particular attention is paid to the perception of these qualities through the male gaze and to the heroines’ preservation of individuality and freedom of choice under external scrutiny. The analysis argues that Austen’s irony exposes contradictions within the standards of perfection imposed on women. It also clarifies the distinction between physical attractiveness, ostentatious displays of talent, and genuine moral worth. The findings illuminate Austen’s portrayal of women as autonomous subjects with their own values and emotional needs, rather than merely as individuals seeking social approval.
