The article examines the lexical-semantic, formal, and communicative features of archaisms used in A. Cho‘lpon’s novel Night and Day. It analyses the criteria for distinguishing archaisms from historicisms, regional variants, and culturally marked vocabulary. Contextual, componential, and functional-stylistic analysis reveals the textual functions of the units farang, aytmoq, chas bermoq, hamal, saraton, and benamoz. The findings show that archaic features manifest themselves differently across these units: in some cases, a particular meaning or use within a phrase, rather than the word itself, is characteristic of a specific historical period. The article proposes examining a unit’s lexical status separately from its literary function when interpreting the archaic layer of the text.
