The article examines education, literacy, script reform, literature, theatre and cultural institutions in the Uzbek SSR during the 1930s. Drawing on the supplied manuscripts, studies available through ZiyoNET and international scholarship, it explores the relationship between expanding cultural opportunities and increasing ideological control. Historical and comparative analysis highlights the limits of measuring cultural development through institutional growth alone. Particular attention is paid to repression and its effects on creative work and the transmission of knowledge.
