The article presents a contrastive cognitive-pragmatic analysis of somatic phraseological units in German and Uzbek. The aim isto systematize meaning formation in somatic idioms within the conceptual chain “body – thought – emotion – action”. Thematerial includes German and Uzbek phraseological dictionaries and selected materials of pragmatic-cognitive analysis.Conceptual, contrastive and contextual-pragmatic methods are applied. The findings indicate common patterns based on the bodycomponents Kopf and bosh, as well as Augen and ko‘z, while the choice of bodily loci for emotional meanings differs across thetwo languages. In German, Kopf, Herz, Hand, Finger and Fuß perform diverse cognitive and pragmatic functions; Uzbekemploys bosh, yurak, jigar, ich, qo‘l, ko‘z and oyoq in a broader distribution of emotional and social meanings. Particularattention is paid to conceptualizations of assistance, respect, reproach, fear, suffering, autonomy and control. The proposed modelmakes it possible to interpret somatic phraseological units simultaneously as secondary-nomination units, cognitive models andpragmatic resources of communication.
