Annotatsiya

This article examines how Meg Wolitzer’s The Wife (2003) constructs female subjectivity through retrospective first-person narration, concealed literary authorship, and the unequal distribution of authority within marriage. Drawing on feminist literary criticism and narratology, it analyzes the novel’s framing journey to Helsinki, Joan Castleman’s recollections of her education and marriage, the gradual disclosure of her contribution to Joe Castleman’s books, and the ambiguous conclusion. The analysis argues that the conflict between private creative labor and public literary prestige is not simply represented thematically: it is reproduced in the novel’smanagement of narrative information. Joan’s storytelling reclaims interpretive authority even as her decision to protect Joe’s reputation complicates any straightforward narrative of emancipation. The study therefore distinguishes narrative agency from public recognition and identifies marital transformation as an incomplete, contested process rather than a resolved break with patriarchal expectations.
