Annotatsiya

Clay minerals, and smectites such as montmorillonite in particular, are among the most widely studied natural sorbents because of their layered structure, high cation exchange capacity, and large surface area. In their natural, hydrophilic state, however, clays have a limited affinity for nonpolar and weakly polar organic pollutants. Organic modification of clay surfaces with surfactants - cationic, anionic, nonionic, amphoteric, or combinations thereof - converts the hydrophilic mineral into an organophilic hybrid material commonly known as an organoclay. This review synthesizes current understanding of how different classes of surfactants interact with clay surfaces and interlayer spaces, the structural and textural changes that result (interlayer expansion, loss of specific surface area, altered thermal behavior), the analytical methods used to characterize organoclays, and the principal fields of application, including water and soil remediation, drilling fluid engineering, and polymer nanocomposite manufacture. Particular attention is given to the comparatively underexplored role of nonionic surfactants and to hybrid modification strategies that combine cationic and nonionic agents, which recent studies suggest can enhance surfactant loading beyond what either class achieves alone.
