The pragmatic functions of phraseological expressions in literary discourse

Annotatsiya

Phraseological expressions constitute an important component of literary discourse because they convey not only lexical and figurative meanings but also pragmatic information. Their use enables writers to express attitudes, emotions, intentions, interpersonal relationships, and culturally determined meanings in a concise and expressive form. In literary discourse, phraseological expressions may perform such pragmatic functions as evaluation, emotional expression, characterization, intensification, irony, persuasion, and the creation of implicit meanings. Their interpretation depends on the interaction between the linguistic form, the communicative situation, the speaker, the addressee, and the broader cultural context. The present article examines the major pragmatic functions of phraseological expressions in literary discourse and demonstrates how their contextual use contributes to the interpretation and artistic organization of literary texts.
