The article examines medical communication as a specific form of institutional discourse, focusing on its primary and secondary participants and the institutional and communicative roles they perform. Although the physician and the patient function as the central communicants in medical discourse, in the modern healthcare system nurses, pharmacists, laboratory specialists, patients’ relatives, healthcare institution administrators, and other actors also constitute important participants in the communicative process. The article examines the physician’s diagnostic, therapeutic, informative, directive, and psychological-communicative roles, as well as the patient’s status as a source of information, an object of medical intervention, and an active decision-making agent.
