The history of Turkestan, its rich cultural and spiritual life, our rich heritage were studied with great interest not only by local scientists, but also by scientists of the former regime, which eventually formed in our country. One of these scientists is academician Bartold Vasily Vladimirovich (1869-1930) – an orientalist, turkologist, Islamic scholar, one of the founders of the Russian school of oriental studies. V.V. Bartold graduated from the Faculty of Oriental Languages of St. Petersburg University in 1891 and began working here. As a result of his many years of research, in 1900 he defended his thesis entitled «Turkestan in the era of the Mongol conquest» and received the title of historian of the East. The article points out that V.V. Bartold was a scientist who achieved great practical and scientific results in the study of Turkestan.
