This study identifies corpus frequency, semantic compatibility of components, the degree of conventionality of a word combination, and its figurative meaning in context as the main criteria for distinguishing between common-language and individual authorial epithets. A low-frequency unit, however, should not automatically be classified as an individual authorial epithet. The occurrence of a word combination only once does not in itself prove that it was created by the author. Therefore, frequency indicators are interpreted in conjunction with the results of semantic and linguopoetic analysis.
