Annotatsiya

Negation is considered one of the universal linguistic categories that exists in almost all natural languages. It functions as a semantic, grammatical, and pragmatic mechanism through which speakers deny, reject, contradict, or express the absence of an action, state, or quality. This article investigates the grammatical and lexical means of expressing negation in English and Uzbek languages from a comparative linguistic perspective. The research analyzes morphological, syntactic, and lexical forms of negation, highlighting similarities and differences between the two languages. English mainly expresses negation analytically through auxiliary verbs and negative particles such as not, never, and no, whereas Uzbek, as an agglutinative language, predominantly employs morphological suffixes such as -ma/-me together with lexical negative units. The article also discusses pragmatic and stylistic aspects of negation and its role in discourse. The study contributes to comparative linguistics, translation studies, and foreign language teaching methodologies.
