Thyroid gland (thyroid) pathology occupies the second place among endocrinologic diseases. The prevalence of hypothyroidism is about 2%, and in some age groups (elderly women) can reach 6-8%. Thyroid hormone deficiency slows the development of brain tissue and depresses higher nervous activity, which leads to hypothyroid encephalopathy, which is characterized by a decrease in mental activity and intelligence, weakening of conditional and unconditional reflex activity. In hypothyroidism, most organs and systems are affected, which is manifested by a different clinical picture. In addition to the usual manifestations, may prevail symptomatology characteristic of the lesion of a particular system. This fact sometimes makes it difficult to diagnose hypothyroidism. But despite the many symptoms inherent in hypothyroidism, the most pronounced changes are observed in the nervous system and psyche. These disorders increase as the disease progresses. Hypothyroidism often leads to the development of hypothyroid encephalopathy, also manifested by changes in higher mental functions. In neurological, somatic and endocrine diseases, cognitive disorders are frequent manifestations of encephalopathy syndrome.
