Annotatsiya

This article addresses the important role that contextual learning, more especially, reading and listening extensively, plays in helping English as a Second Language (ESL) learners expand their speaking vocabulary. Solo word memory is a common focus of traditional vocabulary acquisition techniques, which might be ineffective for practical application. This paper makes the case that exposure to new words in context, as offered by authentic reading and listening materials, promotes deeper understanding, enhances memory, and makes active recall for speaking easier. In addition to outlining the anticipated results and discussing the implications for enhanced communicative ability, it provides useful strategies for incorporating intensive reading and listening into the ESL curriculum and self-study.
