In this article, the authors consider the role and significance of the Jadidist movement in the revival of national consciousness, in preserving the identity of the spiritual culture of the Turkic peoples, as well as some problems of the formation of secular education in the late XIX - early XX centuries. The article reveals the essence of the socio-political and intellectual movement among Muslim peoples, traditional Islamic education, Jadidism, which later developed into a broad movement of Islamic intellectuals, mainly representatives of the Turkic peoples of the Russian Empire, for the modernization of traditional Muslim societies and the activation of the role of Muslims in the socio-political life of Tashkent and Southern Kazakhstan. Special attention is paid to the history of the opening of the first Russian-native, Jadid (new-fangled) schools in Turkestan in the early 90s of the XIX century, who demanded school reform, the introduction of a new spelling, the expulsion of Arabic and ancient Greek scholasticism from teaching and the development of national cultures
