The subject of the research is the discussion of the orientalist V.V. Bartol’d with the representative of the colonial administration S. Lapin about the origin of the term “sart”. The authors consider in detail such aspects as the formation of ethnographic and oriental knowledge about the peoples of Western Turkestan. Particular attention is paid to two opposing views on the origin and name of the Sart people in the imperial context. The influence of scientific discussions on the formation of the Uzbek nation is also indicated.
