The article is devoted to the study of controversial issues of the policy of AlexanderNevsky in the second period of his political activity. After the Battle of the Ice, Prince Alexanderwas not able to solve military-political problems with the help of military force. Prince Alexanderkept a balance between East and West to protect Russia and retain personal power. The prince madecautious attempts to negotiate support with the pope. In addition, the Tatar threat made it necessary tonegotiate with the Horde rulers. Some historians view the diplomacy of the prince as an unprincipledpolicy. The author concludes that in his foreign policy combinations the prince showed himself as acautious ra-tional politician. Alexander developed contact with the pope when it became clear that thepope would not provide military assistance. In relations with the Horde rulers, Alexander ascendedonly when it was not possible to avoid relations. Thanks to the activities of Alexander, Russia retainedrelative inde-pendence and got a chance for further development.
