LAND USE IMPACT ON WATER QUALITY OF THEZARAFSHAN RIVER BASIN

The Zarafshan River Basin, one of the crucial water resources in Central Asia, faces significant water quality challenges due to land use changes as urbanization and agricultural expansion. This study examines the impact of land use patterns on water quality during 2017-2022. By analyzing land cover and water quality data including ammonium nitrogen (N-NH4), nitrite nitrogen (N-NO2), nitrate nitrogen (N-NO3), chemical oxygen demand (COD), dissolved oxygen (DO) and temperature, the research identifies critical factors influencing water quality. It was found that most parameters remained below the maximum admissible concentration (MAC), except for N-NH4 in 2022 (2.6 MAC), and N-NO2 in 2020 (1.25 MAC). The land use data analysis revealed fluctuations in crop and rangeland coverages, a notable increase in built-up areas due to urbanization. Redundancy Analysis (RDA) showed a moderate positive correlation between built-up areas and N-NH4, N-NO3 (RDA 0.66). Moreover, a significant relationship (RDA 0.89) between built-up areas and organic pollution (COD) in the basin was investigated. Recommendations include integration of sustainable land use practices, improved wastewater management and monitoring to mitigate pollution and ensure the long-term health of the basin.
