The article asks whose gaze conscience and the related moral notions represent in English and Uzbek. The data come from dictionaries and two fiction subcorpora compiled by the author (Uzbek 1,278,225 words, English 1,019,718 words). The analysis combines the mutual definability of dictionary entries, corpus frequency and conceptual metaphor theory. Fourteen metaphorical models of conscience were identified: 4 isomorphic, 4 allomorphic, 2 lacuna candidates and 4 open. The models of court, voice, burden and sleep are lexicalized in English but occur only in Uzbek discourse. The evaluating instance is shown to be an innerjudge and a person’s word in English, and the gaze of the community and God in Uzbek.
