From collecting to international recognition: stages in the development of the state museum of art of karakalpakstan named after i.v. Savitsky

This article presents a comprehensive analysis of the history and evolution of the State Museum of Art of the Republic of Karakalpakstan named after I.V. Savitsky, one of the region's major cultural institutions. It examines key stages in the formation of the collection, ranging from I.V. Savitsky’s participation in the Khorezm Archaeological- Ethnographic Expedition led by S.P. Tolstov to the museum's opening and the subsequent expansion of its holdings to include paintings, graphic art, and sculptures. Particular attention is paid to the development of the collection's three core areas: Karakalpak folk and applied arts, Uzbek fine art from the 1920s to the 1940s, and the Russian avant-garde collection. Drawing on an analysis of the legal framework of independent Uzbekistan and contemporary museum practices, the article traces the museum's institutional transformation, highlighting the adoption of multimedia and digital technologies, the expansion of international cooperation, and its growing appeal to tourists. The study concludes that the museum has evolved from a local collection of folk art objects into an institution fully integrated into the global museum landscape and recognized by the international professional community.
