Relevance: The article establishes the relevance and practical significance of the research objectives by addressing the need for reliable insulation condition assessment and electrical safety in distribution networks. Insulation ageing, moisture ingress, contamination, and mechanical damage can increase phase-to-earth leakage currents and contribute to single-phase earth faults that may develop into multiphase faults. These risks underscore the scientific and practical importance of monitoring insulation parameters and detecting deterioration at an early stage. The need to address the research objectives is substantiated through a comparative analysis of the capabilities and limitations of existing diagnostic methods. Specifically, the study examines the limitations of the direct earth-fault and ammeter–voltmeter methods, including the intentional creation of an earth fault, increased phase-to-earth voltages on healthy phases, additional risks to personnel and electrical equipment, and limited capability to assess the insulation condition of individual phases separately. These limitations justify the comprehensive analysis of insulation admittance and its conductive and susceptive components, the establishment of diagnostic criteria, and the refinement of measurement techniques. The engineering significance of the study is reinforced by its examination of the technical constraints associated with connecting an additional conductance, particularly substantial power dissipation and temperature-dependent changes in the parameters of the resistive element. The analysis of the additional-capacitance method provides a basis for considering an alternative approach to determining insulation parameters while addressing these constraints. The research objectives are directed towards the early detection of adverse changes in insulation condition, improved measurement reliability, and the development of monitoring approaches that do not disrupt normal network operation. Accordingly, the relevance and practical necessity of the research objectives are adequately substantiated within the scope of the theoretical and technical analysis presented. Nevertheless, incorporating operational statistics, experimental measurements, and quantitative comparisons of the methods in terms of accuracy, sensitivity, and safety would further strengthen the study’s evidence base. . Aim: To analyse the diagnostic capabilities of the direct single-phase earth-fault method, the ammeter–voltmeter method, and methods involving the connection of additional active and reactive admittances in distribution electrical networks; to establish relationships between the total admittance, conductance, susceptance, insulation impedance, and electrical safety risks; and to substantiate diagnostic criteria for the reliable assessment of insulation condition. Methods: The study employed comparative and analytical methods, equivalent-circuit modelling, and calculation-based assessment of insulation parameters. In the direct single-phase earth-fault method, the earth-fault current and phase-to-earth voltage were measured to determine the total insulation admittance and impedance. In the ammeter–voltmeter method, the insulation conductance, capacitive susceptance, and total admittance were calculated from phase-to-earth voltage measurements obtained before and after connecting an additional active or reactive admittance of a known value. Calculation relationships based on line voltage, zero-sequence voltage, and phase-to-earth voltage measurements were analysed. The technical capabilities of the method involving the connection of an additional capacitance were also evaluated. Results: It was established that the total insulation admittance can be determined as the ratio of the earth-fault current to the phase-to-earth voltage, yins=Ie.f/Uph-e, while the total insulation impedance can be calculated as Zins=1/yins. An increase in insulation conductance indicates higher leakage currents and dielectric losses, whereas an increase in capacitive susceptance results in higher phase-to-earth capacitive current and single-phase earth-fault current. An increase in total admittance and a decrease in insulation impedance were identified as the main diagnostic indicators of insulation deterioration. Selecting the additional admittance within the range of 0,5yins to 2yins improves measurement sensitivity and reduces calculation errors. Due to the high power dissipation and temperature dependence of high-voltage active conductance elements, the use of power capacitors as an additional capacitance was substantiated. Comprehensive assessment of the total admittance, conductance, and susceptance provides a basis for detecting hidden insulation defects, monitoring insulation deterioration trends, and predicting electrical safety risks.
