Respiratory- syncythial bronchiolitis (RSB) is the most common cause of bronchiolitis in infants and young children, with approximately 125,000 hospital admissions and 250 infant deaths each year in the United States alone. World Health Organization global estimates indicate that RSV accounts for more than 60% of acute respiratory infections in children. In addition, RSV is responsible for more than 80% of lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs) in children under 1 year of age and annually during the peak viral season. Thus, RSV is by far the most common cause of childhood bronchiolitis and pneumonia. There is certainly an increased risk of subsequent wheezing in children who have had RSV infection at an early age, especially if the primary infection was severe enough to require hospitalization, but the question remains whether RSV is really a causative factor or rather a simple marker or trigger of an already existing one. internal predisposition to the development of bronchial asthma.
